Getting Started

To get started using DM Jot, you have to have a user account. To create your account, click on the Signup link in the menu bar on the left side of the screen.

Your email address is used as your login name, but don't worry, you won't be receiving any spam from DM Jot. DM Jot uses your email address only to send you email in the event that you forget your password. DM Jot will also let your DM email you, in order to ask questions about your character, and if you are a DM, you can be emailed by your players, but no one else gets access.

Creating a PC

Now that you have an account, you're all set to create your PC in DM Jot. Click on the Campaigns link in the menu bar on the left side of the screen. In the list that comes up, click on the campaign to which your PC belongs.

If the campaign that your PC belongs to is not in the list, your DM hasn't created their campaign in DM Jot yet! You should send them a quick email to gently remind them that they need to create their campaign in DM Jot first, before you can create your PC!
After you've clicked on your PC's campaign, you'll see a list of the other PCs in the campaign. Below this list will be a link named New PC. Click here and we'll get into the meat of it!

You should now be seeing the New PC form. Enter a name for your character, as well as his other basic stats. You can enter your PC's height, weight, age, hair, eyes, and other basic stats on this page. You can't set your skills, saves, nor classes here though, we'll handle that in a little while.

Do I really need to enter values in all these fields? No! The only required fields when creating a PC are the campaign, and a name. All the other fields are optional. If you know them, you can set them, or leave them blank and come back and fill them in later.

Once you've got everything setup how you like it, go ahead and click the Create button at the bottom of the form. If there are any errors or problems with your new PC, a red box will appear at the top of the screen informing you of the problem. Otherwise, you'll be teleported to the PC's show page.

Setting Classes, Skills, Saves, and Abilities

Now that you have your PC created, you need to let your DM know what classes, skills, and saves that PC has. If you're just creating this character, you might want to click on the edit at the top of the page. This will take you back to the edit form you saw before, but now, placeholders for your abilities, saves, and basic skills will be listed. You can quickly enter in new values, then click the Update.

If your character just went up a level, or you found some spiffy new equipment, the PC show page makes updating your character as easy as shooting kobolds in a barrel.

Adding Classes

To add a class to your character, click the add icon to the right of the Classes heading. A form will appear in which you can type the name of the class, and select a level for that class. Click Add and your PC's class will be quicker than that quickened magic missile spell your PC took to the face in his or her last adventure!

Setting Skills

Setting up your skills is a piece of cake too. A basic set of skills will be listed under the Skills heading. Simply click the Up arrow and down icons until your skill modifier is right on target. If you want to add more skills, click the add next to the skills heading.

Setting Saves

Saves work much like skills. Click the Up arrow and down icons until your save modifiers are just right.

Setting Abilities

Abilities work just like saves, click the Up arrow and down icons until your ability scores are correct.

Setting Potent Attacks

This field gives your DM an idea of how much firepower your character is packing. You don't have to be super detailed, just give enough info for your DM to get the gist of things. There are three fields to fill in, a name for the attack, an attack bonus, and a damage field. Here are a few examples:

Name Bonus Damage
Fireball N/A 6d6 fire damage in a 30 ft radius burst
Longsword +11 1d8+4, +6 versus kobolds
Shortbow +10 1d6+2

Editing a PC

There are two basic ways to edit your PC. The first is by clicking the edit icon at the top of the PC's page. This will allow you to set skill ranks, saves, experience points and other things. This is the fastest way to go if you have a lot of changes to make.

The second way to edit a PC, is from the PC's page. You'll notice the following icons scattered about the page: Up arrow, down, and add. Clicking on these icons will increment, decrement, or add to their respective stats. These are useful for quick changes, like when you level up, or find some sweeet new magic item for your character.

Help! I forgot my password!

Not to worry, DM Jot can reset your password, and email the new password to you. Just click here, and enter your email address.

Why can I view some PCs but not others?

Most PCs are private. They can be viewed only by site admins, the players who created them, or their DM. Some PCs however, are special. They have been marked public by a site admin. Anyone can view (but not edit) a public PC. These PCs serve as examples, or are no longer in play.
