Notes

Tau Ontible

Breathe…

Pesilat! Fifth sikap!

Ring finger extends and upper body weight is now supported entirely by thumbs and forefingers…

Pesilat! Middle Gerak-geri!

Arms glide outward and chest touches floor. A kick propels torso and hips to a crouching stance. Weight equally balanced on both feet. Arms stay wide…

Pesilat! Buah!

Opponent enters circle. Crouched in Upper Gerak-geri. Breathe… Opponent approaches. The dance begins.

Subsistence farmers with ten older children to feed, Tau’s parents were more than willing to allow a traveling monk to take the boy under his tutelage. Tau studied Wali Songo Silat under Sukarno Wulandari for thirteen years. Hardly the most physically promising pesilat the master had ever trained, Tau nonetheless excelled at the mental aspects of the martial art.

Garbed in a sleeveless robe, his arms outstretched, Tau balances his weight on a precarious pile of three polished stones. The slightest of muscle adjustments keep his form. His face is a mask of serenity, his concentration perfect. A lavender nimbus coalesces at his forehead.

Crack!

The rattan cane leaves an angry purple bruise across corded shoulders. Both his concentration and the nimbus fade. Beads of sweat break out on Tau’s tattooed forehead.

Again!

Calf muscles adjust, and Tau begins the recitation of the 137 mantras again.

Wulandari had taken six pupils over his long life. Tau was the the third to manifest a soul gem, and only the first to reach Fidai (fifth circle). Three days before his nineteenth birthday Tau woke early to find the campfire dwindling to embers and his master gone. Sukarno’s keris lay on a nearby stone, its straight pommel a sharp contrast to the waving, asymmetrical blade sheathed in a blue-dyed leather scabbard.

Tau looked to the footprints leading to the horizon in the east. Taking up the dagger, Tau headed west.
